Debby Friday - Bitchpunk Cassette

Deathbomb Arc

DEBBY FRIDAY is an experimentalist.
She does many things at once.

Born in Nigeria, raised in Montreal, and now based in Vancouver, DEBBY FRIDAY’s work spans the spectrum of the audio-visual, resisting categorizations of genre and artistic discipline. She is at once sound theorist and musician, composer and performer, video artist, poet and PUNK GOD. Debby got her start in music as an internationally touring DJ known for her daring, idiosyncratic sets, opening for both Mykki Blanco and Princess Nokia. In March 2018, she released her first self-produced EP, titled BITCHPUNK, to reverberating underground acclaim. Featured in several publications, including: Thump, Loud & Quiet, Bandcamp and Le Canal Auditif.

Writing for Mask Magazine, John Rufo describes the artist as, “intricately dexterous and dangerous… [one who] echoes, samples, sings, speaks and reverberates through innumerable Black diasporic sonic geographic landscapes and fields…challenging the order of things, [using] against-ness as a propulsion for creation.” Her multi-disciplinary art practice explores themes of ritual and feminine aggression as well as discourses of power, forces of diaspora and the aesthetics of eroticism. Her second release, also self-engineered and produced, is due in 2019. Friday has described the forthcoming EP as “hot noise: full of grief and full of relief. It is the painful and pleasurable next step, the sacrificial offering of my old life to the new.”
